Don't blush, but I think you're all pretty "sharp"...

The first two weeks have blown by, and we are up against a real beast here. From accounting to economics to marketing, a host of assignments and exams wait for us in week three. It is a lot of work requiring a great deal of organizational ability to keep up. However, no one is having trouble because the class is full of sharp, keen and well balanced people.

After a bit of time to assess my peers I have realized that there is a two fold benefit to this year.

First of all, there is much theoretical business knowledge to acquire. As a lifelong entrepreneur, I have skills that can’t be taught…but I also don’t have skills that can. That’s where the ECM program fits in for me. I can learn all about brand value in marketing, consumer surplus in economics, or human motivators in organizational behaviour. When you’re dealing with real life problems, no one sits you down beforehand and says, “Ok kid, look, here’s a lecture on Thomas and Ely before you make this HR decision”.

Secondly, and critically important as well is what I will learn from my classmates. As I said, there are some smart folks sitting in that room, and they all have something to contribute that extends from extremely rich and varied life experiences. I am super excited for this. The admissions process is pretty broad based which means we’ve got a troop of dynamic individuals ready to assault the business world. We’re all ready to load up with the tools we’ll need to be successful and because we’re balanced people to begin with, we’ve got a good start…
